2017 marks the retirement of Dennis Prieve as the Gulf Oil Foundation Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Dennis Prieve has been a pioneer in the measurement and modeling of colloidal interactions and their effects on transport phenomena, especially electrokinetic and chemically driven flows. Prieve's efforts to infer the long-range particle-wall interaction for colloids in a shear flow led to the discovery of electrokinetic lift and the development of total internal reflection microscopy (TIRM), a tool that enabled the measurement of colloidal forces as weak as 0.1 pN for Brownian colloids near surfaces. In his group and those who have adopted it, TIRM has afforded critical insights into electrostatic, retarded van der Waals, steric and depletion forces. Prieve has chaired the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists, the 2002 Gordon Research Conference on Chemistry at Interfaces and the 2004 International Electrokinetics Conference and has served as an Editor for Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects. Furthermore, Prieve was previously the Chairman of both Group 1 (1991 - 1993) and Area 01C (1987 - 1990) of AIChE. This symposium honors the scholarship and leadership Professor Prieve has offered the Interfacial Phenomena community throughout his forty-two year academic career.
