Functionalized Composite Silica Thin Film Membrane for Biomimetic Separations

Composite silica thin film membranes are proposed as a less costly and more efficient alternative for dilute aqueous solute separations. By immobilizing boronic acid carriers within the lipid bilayer in the silica thin film, selective transport of sugars can be achieved. However, the absence of boronic acid carriers does not prevent unwanted permeability of sugars and impurities through the membrane. Our current work focuses on investigating and minimizing this background leakage by tethering the lipid bilayer to silica thin film with the lipid-like silane 13-(trichlorosilylmethyl)heptacosane. This will form a more cohesive lipid bilayer and in general, a better membrane.
