The use of fossil resources has led to environment issues related to CO2emissions. As a result, a sustainable bio-economy requires the efficient utilization of all the ingredient of biomass. One of the sources from biomass is sugar. Many useful reaction product are available from sugar under existing of acid.

As well known, D-fructose is transformed into 5-hydroximethylfurfural (HMF) by dehydration and then, HMF is changed to levulinic acid (LA) and/or formic acid (FA) by hydration. The target product of HMF is a starting material for the synthesis of industrially important products. For example, HMF is a starting materials such as 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, etc., and new polymer materials.

For many years, method of HMF has been developed, but the procedure is not established yet, because the reactions mechanism are very complicated and hence it is difficult to obtain the HMF selectively. Furthermore, the kinetic study of HMF formation seems to be performed not in detail. The main purpose of the study is to establish high-yield method for the synthesis of HMF based on kinetic consideration. The reactions were performed experimentally under conditions of various hydrochloric acid concentrations at room temperature. The concentrations history was determined by NMR technique. Using try and error method, the reaction rate constants were determined by comparing concentration change experimentally obtained with theoretical curves evaluated from several kinetic models.<span">It should be noted from the analysis of the constants that some particular reaction rate was affected by the acidic catalyst concentration. By controlling the specific reactions, production rate of HMF seems to be controlled.

The detail discussions will be presented at the conference.
