(44b) The Chemical Engineering of Skiing and Snowboarding

From ski wax to ski lifts, the sport has many chemical engineering applications.  The ability to engineer materials that function reliably in all types of weather in different load conditions and with outstanding safety is evident in every aspect of the skiing and snowboarding industry.  Building the world’s most complex ski lifts demands outstanding mechanical, electrical and structural engineering, but many complex problems are also solved by applying excellence in the application of materials and the not so obvious chemical engineering aspects of the system as well.   Needless to say the tricks and skills of the industry are influenced by the methods, teamwork and skill that derive their functions from excellent engineering from many directions.
