Particle flows pervade the chemical, energy, pharmaceutical, agricultural and mining industries, in addition to many geophysical phenomena.  Many of these industries have significant opportunities for optimization and productivity enhancements, or, in the case of geophysical flows, mitigation of negative effects/destruction.  Reliable modeling and simulation tools can provide the critical understanding that is needed to achieve these goals.  This talk will present several examples in this regard and showcase the most recent advances in dense-phase, fluid-solids flow modeling by my research group.  Both continuum and discrete modeling frameworks for the particle phase will be discussed as well as the relationship between the two approaches.
