Corrosion protection has become an issue of prime importance in modern society.1, 2 Epoxy/magnetite/carbon nanofibers nanohybrid coatings have been studied for anticorrosion purposes of stainless steel (SS). The thickness effect on the anticorrosion properties of the coatings were investigated in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution by monitoring the open circuit potential (Eocp) and tracing quasi-stationary polarization (tafel) curves of the coatings-coated stainless steel electrode. A significantly positive shift in the open current potential, Eocp, was observed from the Eocp-time curves of the nanocomposite coated stainless steel electrodes. Consistently, extrapolation of Tafel plots gave a much more positive corrosion potential (Ecorr) and much lower corrosion current (Icorr). The thinner nanocomposite coating lost its protectiveness after 40 hrs whereas the thicker nanocomposite coating retains its anticorrosion properties during the study. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows no chemical changes in the nanocomposite coatings, suggesting water infiltration induced coating failure mechanism.
