(713a) Integrated Absorber-Regenerator System for Rapid Screening of Thermal and Thermo-Oxidative Degradation of Primary and Secondary Amines for Predicting Fate in Validation-Scale CO2 Capture (CC) Systems

Primary and secondary alkanoamine-based systems are currently considered the technology of choice for early demonstration of CO2 capture (CC) solutions for power plants. Therefore, it is of great interest to predict the fate of amines over long periods of cyclic operations. We have incorporated existing thermal decomposition data on MEA (monoethanol amine) to design and operate an integrated absorber-regenerator system for rapid screening and simulation of the cyclic absorption of CO2 and regeneration of the amines. The integrated rapid screening system includes: (1) the absorber; (2) the regenerator, and (3) the online electrochemical monitoring system for assessing the corrosion potential of stable and transient species from the amine degradation. The screening process is validated by matching the historic rate data for thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation of MEA in the temperature 50 to 175oC with varying parametric conditions (amine concentration, O2 concentration and CO2 loading). The data from the screening of varying primary and secondary amine compositions with conditions relevant to validation-scale CC systems will be presented.
