Bamboo fiber mat reinforced polypropylene composites (BMRP) were prepared by double steel belt press, the effects of bamboo fiber contents, compatibilizer types and fiber alkali treatment on mechanical behavior of composites were studied and relevant interface adhesion was investigated by SEM. The results show: the impact strength of BMRP reaches 15.85 KJ/m2, the flexural strength and modulus increase to 74.47 MPa and 4033.3 MPa respectively while the tensile strength and modulus increase to 45.57 MPa and 4358.4 MPa with bamboo fiber content of 40%; the mechanical properties of BMRP are enhanced significantly as compatibilizer MPP added to matrix, which increases by 19.3% in the impact strength, by 26.8% and 17.5% in the flexural strength and modulus, and by 37.4% and 13.4% in the tensile strength and modulus respectively; MPP and VPP combination produce a synergistic enhancement which lead to the flexural strength and tensile strength increase by 33.7% and 39.5%,. The mechanical properties of BMRP show a trend of falling after rising if bamboo fiber was alkali treated, which indicates the optimized alkali concentration of 2%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results show that good interface structure is formed between fiber and matrix with the addition of compatibilizer.
