Frequency response methods have been developed as an alternative technique for the determination of mass transfer mechanisms controlling the transport of gases into and out of adsorbent materials. Recent results in the literature are showing that this technique seems to be the best for discriminating the controlling mechanism. It is also possible to reveal two or more different controlling mechanisms that may dominate in different frequency ranges. The present talk will focus on the experimental methodology for determining in and out of phase responses using the volumetric frequency response approach, which is most typically carried out with the use of a bellows connected to a reciprocating moving shaft in constant volume system. The newly constructed and commissioned experimental apparatus will be described in detail. The analysis and results will be discussed in light of experimental data obtained with CMS 172K with O2, Ar, CH4, N2 and CO2 at 1 atm and four different temperatures.
