(655c) Jamming in Granular Systems

Particle jamming and breakage in the gap between a rotating blade and a containing vessel frequently occur in equipment used to process particulate materials. Jamming can be detrimental, for example during mixing, or desired, as in the case of milling. In this study, we present experimental and computational results investigating the frequency of jamming events between a blade tip and a wall as a function of the blade speed, gap width, vessel fill height, and operating time. In addition, several blade tip designs are presented to study their influence on jamming frequency.
