Electrical swing adsorption is used with new composite materials. Mixed matrix adsorbents consist of a polymer used as a mechanical support of an adsorbent in form of grains dispersed in the polymer. Polymerization takes place around a metallic rod. The result is thus a rod covered by the adsorbent material. The adsorbent can thus be heated by passing current through the rod. The adsorbent is activated charcoal. It is first impregnated with water in order that the polymer does not fill the pores. Water is subsequently removed by heating. The experimental cell is a parallelepiped bloc of Teflon forming a cavity of 12.4 cm (length) x 2.4 cm (width) x 5 cm (depth) and containing 39 metal rods placed perpendicular to the gas flow and covered by the composite material containing 50% mass of active carbon. Application is shown in the removal and recovery of carbon dioxide.
