Abstract

In the frame of the EU project STORHY (2004-2008) [1] an 8 kg-NaAlH4 [2] based hydrogen storage tank has been designed and built. In parallel a new laboratory for storage tank testing and characterization has been constructed. According to the safety classification, this laboratory is divided in three parts: 1st part is a explosion proof chamber, 2nd part is a hydrogen certified laboratory and the 3rd part is used for the thermal auxiliary equipment. This paper will present basic features of the experimental testing facility, the storage tank investigated in this study as well as experimental results concerning the performance of the storage tank under different pressure/temperature and flow conditions like measured hydrogen charging and release rates as well as capacities measured under different conditions. An outlook on an improved second generation storage tank which is currently under development in the frame of the EU project NESSHY is given.
