General purpose or multi-purpose Pilot Plants are common in many chemical and pharmaceutical companies, however they are not the norm in companies in other industries. Xerox has started operating a large general purpose specialty chemicals pilot plant in the early 1980s and has used it in the development of a variety of organic chemicals and specialty polymer products.
