Nano-scale crystals of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) were produced by Rapid Expansion of Supercritical Solutions (RESS). Carbon dioxide was used as the solvent. The process produced particles with the mean size in the range from 100-500 nm with a relatively narrow size distribution. Particles were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction, HPLC and melting point analysis. The effects of the pre-expansion conditions (temperature and pressure) and the nozzle diameter on the RDX particle size were investigated. Bulk quantities of RDX have been generated. Explosive formulations based on nanocrystalline RDX have been prepared. Preliminary test results on the initiation sensitivity to shock and impact have been attained.
