Climate Change Policy Statement

This policy as written is a “call to conform.” We are not conformists. We are leaders. We challenge paradigms. We lead change. We break down barriers. We debate and expand our knowledge and understanding. We learn. We teach. We add value.

We do not “fill a unique niche.” We understand physics, chemistry, and thermodynamics better than any other science discipline. We have proven that surface thermodynamic properties dictate surface temperatures, not the atmosphere. Human activity has converted earth’s living surfaces into inanimate, heat producing surface. Temperatures over these human surfaces are dramatically warmer than the living surface they replaced. Focusing on these real issues is not just mitigation, it is solving the problem.

This organization should lead the paradigm shift away from greenhouse gas emission reduction and sequestration. Our focus should be on correcting the heating effects that threaten human settlements. We know how to cool environments. We could convert urban heat islands into urban oases if that was our focus. This will save lives and correct many of the climate change threats. Focusing on GHG’s might change the projections of climate models but it won’t resolve any real issues.

AIChE leadership should support and encourage debate on critical science issues. Our publications and policies should support all members. We are an inclusive organization. On controversial topics, a point/counter-point presentation would better educate our members and represent this organizations diversity and understanding of critical issues.
