Program: In this online meeting, we will have a presentation on Ethical Practice by Deborah L. Grubbe, PE, CEng, NAC, Owner and President of Operations and Safety Solutions, LLC, and AIChE President Elect. Ms. Grubbe has seen engineering ethics from many perspectives, and will bring her broad perspective to the webinar. A registered PE, she is a former Chair of the Law Enforcement and Ethics Committee of the Delaware Board, has consulted with NASA on safety culture after the Columbia Shuttle Accident, and has lectured extensively to students and professionals on safety and ethics. She has 40 years’ experience in industry and in private practice, and is currently co-authoring an e-book on an "Engineer's Professional Responsibility". The meeting will be hosted by Peter Kabatek, Susquehanna Local Section Chair.

Abstract: Ms. Grubbe will speak to the maintaining of proper ethics in all phases of chemical engineering practice, and will review data from a  survey of AIChE members. She will share some similarities between a few well-known ethical lapses and will address trends in ethics performance in education and in business. Lastly, Deborah will offer some perspectives on what actions you can consider if you find yourself in an ethical dilemma.

Speaker Bio: Deborah Grubbe is Owner and President of Operations and Safety Solutions, LLC, where she helps firms improve their safety and operational performance. Her client list includes firms in the chemical, oil and gas, construction, healthcare and aerospace industries. She is a retired BP Vice President and had a 30-year career at DuPont where she worked as an operations, engineering and safety executive. She also serves as an advisor to start-up companies in Philadelphia and in London.

Deborah has been a member of the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel and was a consultant on safety culture to the Columbia Shuttle Accident Investigation Board. She is an Emeritus member of the Center for Chemical Process Safety and has worked with the US Army to support the Demilitarization of the US Chemical Weapon Stockpile. Deborah is the current President-Elect of AIChE and heads their Center for Ethical Practice. She was the first woman elected to the State of Delaware Professional Engineering Registration Board, where she served 2 years as the Chair of the Law Enforcement and Ethics Committee. Deborah is a licensed professional engineer in Delaware and is a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom. She is currently co-authoring a book on ethics and an engineer’s professional responsibility.

Deborah earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. She received a Winston Churchill Fellowship to attend Cambridge University in England, where she received an advanced degree in Chemical Engineering.

Deborah has been named “Engineer of the Year” in the State of Delaware and in the Delaware Valley. In 2010, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from Purdue University and in 2013, she was elected to the National Academy of Construction. United Kingdom, Deborah is married and currently resides near Philadelphia.
