Fani Boukouvala, CAST Director 2021-2023

Fani Boukouvala is an Assistant Professor in the School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. She obtained her BS in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2008 and her PhD in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering from Rutgers University in 2013. Before joining Georgia Tech, she worked as a Postdoctoral Associate at Princeton University and Texas A&M University. Her research group focuses on merging data-analytics and optimization with chemical engineering fundamentals to model and optimize complex systems with applications in energy systems, plastics recycling, electric grid operations and process intensification. Fani has received several awards, including the NSF CAREER Award, and three Best Paper awards in Computers and Chemical Engineering (2015), Optimization Letters (2017) and Journal of Global Optimization (2017). Fani experienced the benefits of being part of the CAST community as a graduate student and since then she has served as the 2019 Programming Chair for the area of Data and Information Systems (10e) and the AIChE-CAST Young Professionals Liaison during 2017-2020. Due to the recent increasing interest in data-science and computational modeling, Fani believes that CAST should have a critical role to play within the AIChE community. As a CAST director, Fani would like to use her experience as the Young Professionals liaison to increase engagement of young chemical engineers in process systems engineering and specifically focus on increasing the representation of underrepresented groups within our community.
