Stefanie is an Associate Professor in Engineering Biology at the Department of Biochemical Engineering, University College London (UK). She completed her PhD in Biochemistry on the anaerobic biosynthesis of Vitamin B12 in Professor Martin Warren’s group at Queen Mary University, London. During her postdoctoral training and as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Kent, she largely focused on the characterisation and engineering of bacterial microcompartments for the construction of nano-bioreactors. Her group's research currently focuses on engineering nature-inspired protein compartments (including virus-like particles and viral vectors) for applications in vaccines and gene- and drug delivery. Stefanie is a Co-Investigator in two Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hubs, where she works on generating protein nanoparticle-based platforms. She leads the collaborative UCL-MIT Vaccine Bioprocess Development and Commercialisation Modular Training course for the Bioprocess Industries, and the UCL international Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) team.
