Sanjiv Gokhale

Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of Construction Management Graduate Program

Sanjiv Gokhale graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India.  He earned a M.S. in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, in 1984, and a doctorate in Civil Engineering from Columbia University, New York.  

He has almost fifteen years of consulting experience, related to design and construction. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of New York.  Sanjiv Gokhale is currently Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of Construction Management Graduate Program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.  He also holds the title of Global Professor of Civil Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD).

Prof. Gokhale is the author of Construction Management of Healthcare Projects, published by McGraw Hill in 2015. He is co-author of Trenchless Technology: Pipeline Design, Construction and Renewal, 2nd Edition, to be published by McGraw-Hill in 2021.

He has been recognized for his teaching and research through many awards.  He received Distinguished Professor Award, Construction Industry Institute (CII), University of Texas at Austin, 2009; Excellence in Teaching Award, School of Engineering, Vanderbilt University, 2005; Tau Beta Pi - Teacher of the Year, Vanderbilt University, 2004. He was elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2009. 

Prof. Gokhale serves on the Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment (BICE) of the National Academies. In that capacity he served on the committee to study the facilities in greatest need of repair or those most impacting mission implementation; evaluate and identify potential factors and approaches in developing a comprehensive capital strategy for the main campus portfolio of facilities of the National Institute of Health (NIH).
