Nasim Pica

Environmental engineer, Ph.D.
CDM Smith

Dr. Nasim Pica is an environmental engineer and scientist in the Denver office of CDM Smith with expertise in fate, transport, and treatment of emerging contaminants including PFAS. She received her doctoral degree from Colorado State University, where she studied produced water treatment and its beneficial reuse in agricultural irrigation in a sustainable Food Water and Energy nexus. During her postdoctoral work, she developed an R programing tool to predict molecular formulas of unknown compounds given a mass spectrum which is the basis of a DoD-SERDP project developing PFAS fingerprinting techniques and she serves as a Co-Principal Investigator. Dr. Pica has more than 10 years of experience working on multi-disciplinary environmental topics including water quality, water treatment and reuse, emerging contaminant, and big data and machine learning. Currently, she is leading a strategic pilot scale project to demonstrate PFAS destruction in various water samples and machine learning based fingerprinting approaches for PFAS.
