Dr. Hörner is group leader at the University of Freiburg and has employed molecular optogenetic switches to steer biological systems with light throughout his scientific career. He studied Molecular Biotechnology at Heidelberg University with a research stay at Harvard Medical School during his Master studies. He performed his PhD work in the lab of Prof. Wilfried Weber and is group leader in the Department of Biochemistry and Synthetic Biology at the University of Freiburg since 2018. To understand how cells decode signals from the environment, his group engineers extracellular optogenetic systems to apply dynamic mechanical and biological stimuli to mammalian cells with high spatiotemporal precision.
