John A. McIlwain

Sr. Principal Automation Engineer, Honeywell

John received a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Canada in 1986. He received a Master of Engineering (Pulp & Paper Systems & Control) from the same school in 1987. Upon graduation he began his career as a process control engineer at Cariboo Pulp & Paper in Quesnel, Canada. He left Cariboo Pulp & Paper in 1999 as the Process Control Engineering Manager and was hired by Allied Signal in Baton Rouge, LA as IT/Process Control Engineering Manager. Later that year Allied Signal acquired Honeywell and John has continued with Honeywell to the present time. The focus of his career has been to utilize automation and process control technology to reduce process variability and optimize plant operations.

John has been a member of AIChE since 1987 and a member of ISA since 2001. In 2006 he was certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt. In 2011 he became an ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP). In 2015 he was awarded the ISA Excellence in Technical Innovation Award.
