Gurumurthy Channabasavaiah

Professor
College of Medicine

Guru obtained his BVSC from Bangalore Veterinary College and MVSC and PhD from Indian Veterinary Research Institute. He was a scientist at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad, India. He did his post-doctoral training at Northwestern University, Chicago, USA. He is currently a Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), Omaha, NE and he is the Director of Mouse Genome Engineering Core Facility at UNMC.

He develops and improves mouse genome editing technologies. He has published several landmark papers on CRISPR and mouse genome engineering technologies. His two popular technologies, Easi-CRISPR and i-GONAD (that were developed along with his long-term collaborator Dr Masato Ohtsuka) are now adapted at hundreds of laboratories worldwide. Thousands of mouse models are generated using those methods each year. His scientific contributions, made since 2016, have attracted over 70 invitations within USA and over 20 invitations from 12 other countries to deliver keynote talks or presentations, to organize workshops and to chair sessions at international conferences. He is one of the six researchers to receive NHGRI’s inaugural Outstanding Genomic Innovator award. Guru also designs and generates custom mouse models for other researchers. He has developed hundreds of models that are used in various biomedical research fields ranging from neuroscience to cancer to virology (Sars-CoV-2).
