Bruno Bühler is Professor of Applied Biocatalysis at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Head of the Applied Biocatalysis Group at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ in Leipzig since 2015. He received his Habilitation in Biotechnology and Technical Microbiology from TU Dortmund University in 2014. He completed his PhD at ETH Zurich in 2003 with a thesis on multistep biocatalysis, which was awarded the ETH Medal for outstanding doctoral work.
His research focuses on redox and multistep biocatalysis, metabolic engineering, photobiotechnology, and sustainable hydrogen production from photosynthetic systems. He has played leading roles in strategic research programs within the Helmholtz Society, coordinating interdisciplinary efforts in sustainable biotechnology and bioeconomy.
