Senior Postdoctoral Fellow
UC Berkeley

Ben Rubin is a senior postdoctoral fellow in the Doudna Lab. His work has focused on developing DNA editing technologies to manipulate targeted organisms and genes in complex microbial communities. These types of gene modifications have previously been confined to single species of microorganisms isolated from their natural diverse consortia. Dr Rubin is developing CRISPR-Cas editing tools to bring experimental genetics to these complex communities, and sequence-based strategies to measure the outcomes. These technologies will be necessary for understanding microbes and their interactions in their natural environments and to enable modification of microbial communities that are crucial to our health and the health of the planet.
