Alexander Urban

Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering
Columbia University

Alex Urban is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, one of the core-members of the Columbia Electrochemical Energy Center (CEEC), and an affiliate member of the Columbia Data Science Institute. Research in his group focuses on understanding and discovering materials for clean-energy applications using atomic-scale modeling and data science.

Alex obtained his PhD from FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany for the development of a coarse-grained electronic structure theory method. He then joined Gerbrand Ceder’s group in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT and later at UC Berkeley for postdoctoral research on the computational discovery of new cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. Alex was an independent University Fellow in the School of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews (UK), before joining the Department of Chemical Engineering at Columbia University in 2019. He was named a 2019 Scialog Fellow for Advanced Energy Storage by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.
