Alan Agulnick

Alan is the Director of Cell Engineering at ViaCyte, Inc. and has 25 years of experience in stem cell and developmental biology. At ViaCyte, Alan has derived human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines for clinical use, optimized protocols for differentiation of hESC into pancreatic cell types and developed methods for producing pancreatic cells from hESC in bioreactors. Currently he is working to apply gene editing technologies for use in future ViaCyte product candidates. Alan obtained a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, pursued postdoctoral work in Developmental...Read more

Chang Liu

Chang Liu is Professor and Chancellor’s Fellow of Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, and Molecular Biology & Biochemistry and the Director of the Center for Synthetic Biology at UC Irvine. Liu graduated from Harvard in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and carried out his PhD at the Scripps Research Institute. His PhD work, done in the laboratory of Peter Schultz, focused on expanding bacterial genetic codes for the co-translational incorporation of post-translational modifications and using expanded genetic codes in the evolution of novel protein function. From...Read more

Claudio Mussolino

Claudio Mussolino is a group leader at the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy in Freiburg (Germany) since 2012. He received his PhD in 2009 at the TIGEM, Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine, in Napoli (Italy) where he established a mutation-independent approach to treat dominant forms of the blindness disorder Retinitis Pigmentosa using zinc finger-based designer transcription factors. Currently, Dr Mussolino research focuses on the development of novel and long-term therapeutic strategies for HIV patients. Using TALE- or CRISPR-based effectors Dr. Mussolino...Read more

Pal Maliga

Pal Maliga is Distinguished Professor of Plant Biology at Rutgers University. He obtained an MS degree at ELTE in Budapest and a PhD at JATE in Szeged, Hungary. Since at Rutgers his research group developed methods for the stable transformation of land plant chloroplast genomes. Chloroplast genome engineering in higher plants has led to an explosion of research concerning the chloroplast genome’s role in photosynthesis, functional analysis of plastid genes by reverse genetics, and mechanisms of plastid gene regulation. His current research interests are tissue specific regulation of...Read more
