In Nigeria, an electricity supply is not standard for every household. To ease the electricity shortage, developing a small-scale gasifier would be a good option. Since the abundant amount of agricultural biomass is present, it would be ideal if biomass could be utilized for gasifiers to eliminate another fuel's purchase and transportation fee. This study investigates the effect of temperature and pressure on agricultural biomass char in different gasification media, carbon dioxide and steam. Experiments were performed in a lab scale downdraft fixed bed gasifier operated at temperatures ranging from 850 to 950 °C and pressures from 1 to 20 bar. The product gas was analyzed for calculation of syngas production and composition. This presentation discusses critical factors influencing gasification rate and the potential for energy production through gasification.
