Cascade and tandem concepts involve the use of multiple catalytic species to facilitate multi-step reactions in a single vessel, and offer opportunities to intensify the overall process. These concepts have proven to higher rates and/or atom efficiencies for a number of homogeneous catalytic processes. This strategy is not as common in the design of heterogeneous catalysts. This paper will briefly describe our efforts to design heterogeneous catalysts using cascading/tandem catalysis concepts.
