(316c) The Curious Redox Behavior of Supported Pd – a Review of Current Understanding

Redox properties of Pd dispersed on refractory supports such as alumina have captured the attention of researchers ever since the work of Farrauto and co-workers [1] in the early 1990s that pointed out two curious features : 1) decomposition of PdO in two steps with increasing temperature, and 2) a pronounced temperature hysteresis in PdO decomposition and re-formation. This presentation summarizes the current state of understanding of both phenomena, and particularly focuses on insights regarding the two-step PdO decomposition obtained from the Datye group at the University of New Mexico [2] and a collaboration between researchers at the University of Michigan and Ford Motor Company [3].
