Mark R. Prausnitz is Named 2023 AIChE Institute Lecturer

June 6, 2023

Mark R. Prausnitz, Regents’ Professor, Regents’ Entrepreneur, and the J. Erskine Love, Jr., Chair in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has been selected by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) to deliver the John M. Prausnitz AIChE Institute Lecture for 2023. AIChE’s 75th annual lecturer, Mark Prausnitz will describe his research during his presentation entitled “Translation of Biomedical Microtechnologies from the Lab to the Clinic,” on Wednesday, November 8, at the 2023 AIChE Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

The Prausnitz AIChE Institute lectureship is awarded to a distinguished member of AIChE who has made significant contributions to chemical engineering in their field of specialization. The lectureship is endowed by the AIChE Foundation in honor of John Prausnitz, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, who pioneered the field of engineering-oriented molecular thermodynamics. The 2023 lecturer — Mark Prausnitz — is the son of the lecture’s namesake.

The Prausnitz AIChE Institute Lecture is a highlight of each year’s AIChE Annual Meeting — a foremost educational forum for chemical engineers working in research and development.

Mark Prausnitz and his colleagues conduct research on biophysical methods of drug delivery using microneedles, lasers, ionic liquids, and other microdevices for transdermal, ocular, and intracellular delivery of drugs and vaccines. At Georgia Tech, where he directs the Center for Drug Design, Development, and Delivery, Prausnitz also teaches an introductory course on engineering calculations, as well as two advanced courses on pharmaceuticals. He has documented his work in more than 325 journal articles and has co-founded eight start-up companies including Micron Biomedical and Clearside Biomedical. Prausnitz earned a BS degree from Stanford University and his PhD degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in chemical engineering.
