Dr. C. Stuart Daw has passed away on July 2nd, 2019 after over 40 years of seminal contributions to the application of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory to understand and control fluidized bed reactors. One of the first breakthroughs resulting from Dr. Daw’s research was the realization that fluidized beds are an example of another type of deterministic chaos, specifically, spatiotemporal chaos. The spatiotemporal chaos arises in fluidization from the nonlinear interaction of bubbles and with the stick-slip motion of solids. Dr. Daw’s leadership in fluidization research, communication to build a community around application of nonlinear dynamics to fluidization, and the understanding of fluidization dynamics and modeling are to a large extent responsible for our overall progress in understanding and controlling fluidized bed reactors. He retired as Corporate Fellow from ORNL and became an AIChE fellow in 2013. To celebrate his career long accomplishments, this session will provide papers that demonstrates and honors Dr. Daw’s legacy in the application of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory to understand and control fluidized bed reactors. This session will be accepting invitation-only papers honoring Daw's numerous contributions in the field of fluidization and fluid-particle systems.
