Interviews were performed with more than ten instructors and professors who are currently incorporating safety into the chemical engineering curriculum. These individuals described their methodology, resources and challenges in this effort. Excellent programs exist with courses dedicated to chemical process safety; some curricula also include a lab safety component. Implementation varies between schools; best practices and tips for effective teaching methods will be summarized. Examples of methods to overcome both explicit and perceived challenges will be discussed. Implementation strategies will be provided for universities with minimal safety experience as well as those that want to achieve a higher level of excellence. A relationship between industry and universities should exist to reinforce this commitment to safety; examples of this type of partnership will be presented.
