Karl R. Haapala

Karl R. Haapala, PhD, is an associate professor and Tom and Carmen West Faculty Scholar in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State Univ. (OSU), where he teaches and conducts research in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on sustainable manufacturing. He is an assistant director of the OSU/DOE Industrial Assessment Center and leads UCLA/DOE Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) efforts at OSU. His research in the Industrial Sustainability Lab addresses manufacturing challenges, including lifecycle engineering, manufacturing performance modeling and improvement, and manufacturing engineering education. He has collaborated on over $10 million in research from government agencies and industrial partners, which has appeared in more than 140 refereed publications. His work has been recognized through university and international-level awards, including the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award. He is past chair of the Life Cycle Engineering (Manufacturing Engineering Div.) and the Design for Manufacturing and Life Cycle (Design Engineering Div.) technical committees of ASME, and technical program chair for ASME MSEC 2021. He has served on the SME Member Council and chair of the SME Student Relations Committee. He received the 2019–2020 Fulbright-Tampere Univ. Scholar Award. Haapala received his PhD in mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics and MS and BS degrees in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological Univ.
