FOSSI Scholars with Dr. Christine Grant and Dr. Paula Hammond

FOSSI Scholars Take Manhattan

Generous FOSSI partners made it possible for several FOSSI scholars to travel to New York in December to celebrate the extraordinary work of the chemical industry.

As a FOSSI Scholar, Dow invited me to attend the AIChE Gala as their guest. It was exciting to be able to travel to New York for the first time and meet my peers and mentors from Dow. — Emmanuel Durojaiye, Morgan State University

FOSSI partners Bayer, Deloitte, and Dow invited scholars to join them at the 2022 AIChE Gala on Park Avenue. The group included Dow scholars Emmanuel Durojaiye (Morgan State), Jalen Mays (Howard), Korin Murray (NC A&T), and Courtney Young (Howard); Bayer scholar Jada Horton (Howard); and Deloitte scholar Kaila White (NC A&T).

Emmanuel Durojaiye said, “As a FOSSI Scholar, Dow invited me to attend the AIChE Gala as their guest. It was exciting to be able to travel to New York for the first time and meet my peers and mentors from Dow. Being chosen as a FOSSI scholar is truly incredible and means I can afford to attend college. If I had to describe my feelings in one word, it would be 'blessed.'”

During the day, the students attended an AIChE lunch and information session led by Eric Bell and Sarah Ewing, and discussed majors, hobbies, internship experiences, and how they are adjusting to college life.

At the gala, they met industry executives as well as AIChE CEO & Executive Director Darlene Schuster, AIChE President Dr. Christine Grant, and gala honoree Dr. Paula Hammond, Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a member of the MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research.

After the formal program, all enjoyed a dessert buffet and mingled with other guests—before heading back to school and for many, exams!
