AIChE Foundation: What is it about chemical engineering that you’re most passionate about?

Rajeev Gautam: Chemical engineers improve the lives of people everywhere through new technologies. In the case of Honeywell’s UOP, I’m most proud of our work in bringing clean fuels, a wide range of petrochemicals and new gas processing technologies to the world.

AIChE: What are you working on that may most positively impact society or the future?

RG: This will be the century of natural gas and we are working on technologies to make it clean, to transport it safely and to convert it to high value petrochemicals. Our technologies for converting biomass into Honeywell Green Jet FuelTM and Honeywell Green DieselTM are the first to be fully compatible with existing fuels—they are near drop-in replacements that do not compete with food for land.

AIChE: How has your relationship with AIChE helped you to fulfill your professional and personal goals?

RG: As the leading provider of technology in our industry, UOP benefits tremendously from its relationship with the AIChE. This is where we build professional friendships and learn about technological advances and emerging trends.

AIChE: Has giving back to the profession played a meaningful role in your life?

RG: UOP has always supported the profession by developing the next generation of scientists and engineers. We ensure our future by inspiring bright young people to pursue a career in chemical engineering and giving them the experience to make lasting contributions to society— much as we benefited from the generations before us.
