Institute for Sustainability (IfS)

IfS is an umbrella organization encompassing a broad spectrum of activities related to sustainability. It has three sub-entities: the Sustainable Engineering Forum (SEF), the Center for Sustainable Technology Practices (CSTP), and the Youth Council on Sustainability Science and Technology (YCOSST). It also provides oversight to the AIChE Sustainability Index (sm).

Environmental Division (ENV)

The ENV division provides relevant programs on current environmental topics and non-confidential information concerning all aspects of environmental activity. The division promotes publication of papers of interest to chemical engineers in environmental activities as well as coordinates the Institute’s activities with other related societies.

Characterizing a Geologic Formation

Special Section
Daniel Brantley, John Shafer
A diverse collaboration is evaluating the geology of the South Georgia Rift basin and its suitability for long-term CO2 sequestration.

Improve Catalytic Oxidizer Operation

Environmental Management
John C. Bonacci
A catalyst guard bed is a simple, low-cost modification that reduces catalyst-replacement costs, saves natural gas and cuts energy expenses.

Measuring and Communicating Sustainability through Eco-Efficiency Analysis

Environmental Management
Bruce W. Uhlman, Peter Saling
Eco-efficiency analysis promotes an understanding of the economic and environmental trade-offs over products’ lifecycles, and supports informed, strategic decision-making in all areas of a business, from spurring innovative product development to...

Dealing with Climate Change at the Local Level

Paul A. Jennings
Whatever problems may be caused by climate change, engineers will be expected to solve them. Now is the time to begin addressing the issues at the local and regional scale.

Industrial-Scale Flare Testing

Environmental Management
Charles Baukal, Jianhui Hong, Mahmoud Fleifil, Robert Schwartz
Advanced flare testing at full scale can help to ensure that the system operates as designed. This article explains what's involved and the parameters that should be measured and evaluated to demonstrate performance, reliability and safety.

What Does It Mean To Be Green?

Phillip E. Savage, P.E.
Sustainability encompasses green chemistry and green engineering, among other concepts. This article explores some of the principles of sustainability and provides a framework for developing a lifecycle approach to chemical engineering.

Collect and Destroy Emissions Safely

Environmental Management
Tony Ennis
Vent collection and destruction systems are complex, and their safety depends on the proper integration of the discrete elements. This article provides guidance on how to achieve that.

A Renewable Route to Propylene Glycol

News Feature
Suzanne Shelley
Rapid expansion in biodiesel production has spurred a bumper crop of competing processes to turn byproduct glycerin into propylene glycol.

Demonstrating CCS Integration

Special Section
Nick Irvin, P.E., P.G., Richard A. Esposito
The largest, fully integrated process for separating CO2 from fluegas and compressing it to a supercritical fluid, transporting the CO2 by pipeline, and injecting the CO2 into a saline reservoir is now underway at the Plant Barry generating station...

Ensure Consistent Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimates

Environmental Management
Karin Ritter. Susann Nordrum, Miriam Lev-On
These techniques can be used to estimate and report GHG emissions from a wide variety of diverse sources, thereby increasing global consistency.

Identification of Cleaner Production Improvement Opportunities

February, 2006
Regardless of its size or nature, every industry generates waste and is responsible for imple-menting the practices of pollution prevention and waste minimization in its day-to-day operations. Whether it's dirty water or toxic wastes, industrial pollution is all the same in one way: it reduces a...

Profiles in Flue Gas Desulfurization

January, 2000
As the need to control process emissions has increased, so have the number of FGD treatment and control strategies. The effectiveness of these treatments vary greatly, depending the types and levels of the materials, as well as the size of the facility. Profiles in Flue Gas Desulfurization will...
