Toxicology 101

This article will describe the fundamentals of toxicology. The article is divided into two main sections — environmental toxicology and human toxicology. Environmental toxicology is regulated by the EPA in the U.S., which places strict limits on the amount of chemical and biological agents that can be released to the environment. Human toxicology is the study of the adverse effects that chemicals can have on humans. Worker exposure limits are regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The article will conclude with a discussion of toxicology research. It will describe how exposure effects are tested in vitro and in vivo and it will demonstrate these concepts with case studies on asbestos, radiation, and noise.
