Adrienne Blanks Shares How FOSSI Prepares the Next Generation of STEM Leaders

The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) was launched in 2020 through a partnership between the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Chemours, and the HBCU Week Foundation. This national, industrywide program provides scholarships, mentorship, and professional development to students pursuing STEM degrees at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), with the goal of eliminating financial barriers and cultivating the next generation of diverse STEM talent.

At the heart of this effort is Adrienne Blanks, Manager of FOSSI Scholar Engagement and Education Programs, who plays a pivotal role in ensuring that each scholar receives the tools, support, and encouragement they need to succeed. We recently spoke with Adrienne to learn more about her work, the impact of FOSSI beyond financial aid, and how intentional engagement is helping scholars build confidence, community, and career-readiness.

Can you share what your role entails as Manager of FOSSI Scholar Engagement and Education Programs, and how it supports the overall mission of FOSSI?

As Manager of FOSSI Scholar Engagement and Education Programs, I lead initiatives that support the academic and professional growth of over 500 STEM scholars attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). I design and manage the Fundamentals of Success curriculum, which covers key topics such as financial education, mental wellness, professional development, and industry-specific skills. These areas are essential for helping students prepare for life beyond college.

My role also involves creating meaningful experiences that connect scholars with each other, their sponsor companies, and the broader STEM workforce. I facilitate new scholar orientation, attend college fairs and campus visits, and coordinate scholar activities such as luncheons and events supported by sponsors, including scholar visits to the New York Stock Exchange and the AIChE Annual Gala. These experiences help students visualize their future and feel more connected to the professional world.

Another key part of my work is helping to bridge communication between scholars and their sponsors. I serve as a point of contact, guiding both sides in building strong, supportive relationships. I also manage program communications, promote internship and co-op opportunities, and track data to evaluate what’s working and what can be improved. All of this supports FOSSI’s mission to prepare students not just to graduate, but to thrive as future leaders in STEM.

With so many FOSSI scholars across the country, how do you stay on top of their progress while ensuring each one feels supported?

It starts with consistency and flexibility. We host required virtual meetings about three times per semester, where scholars connect with each other and learn about topics that support their academic and career goals. For those who can’t attend live due to class or other responsibilities, we make recordings available through email, text, and our private LinkedIn group. Using multiple communication channels helps ensure everyone stays informed and included. I also make it a point to be responsive. Scholars know they can reach out, and I will always respond, whether it’s a question, concern, or request for support.

We also host a virtual career fair every fall. It’s become a great way for scholars and sponsors to connect beyond their assigned matches. It gives sponsors access to the broader FOSSI talent pool, and it allows scholars to explore different companies and opportunities. That kind of access and visibility is important as we grow the program and prepare students for long-term success.

FOSSI is about more than scholarships. It’s about transformation. Can you share a moment where a scholar’s growth really stood out to you?

There are so many moments that reflect growth, but the ones that stand out the most to me are often the quiet wins. For example, when a scholar who usually stays silent during meetings speaks up to ask a question or offer advice to a peer, that tells me they’re gaining confidence and finding their voice. Those small moments are big.

I also think of scholars who may have hit a rough patch with their GPA but decided to get support, whether by reaching out to their sponsor, going to office hours, or using on-campus tutoring. When they take action and follow through, that’s transformation in motion. I’ve seen scholars report back that their GPA improved after taking those steps, and that’s something to be proud of.

When students ask for help with internships or take the initiative to get involved in FOSSI programming, it shows me they’re learning to navigate their journey. That’s a huge part of what this program is about, helping them build the confidence and skills to take ownership of their future.

What are you most excited about for the future of the FOSSI program and its scholars?

I’m excited about the ripple effect this program is creating. With support from over 80 corporate sponsors, we’re able to award more than 100 scholarships each year, and the momentum is growing. What excites me most is watching these students move from college classrooms into internships, co-ops, and full-time roles where they can contribute, lead, and thrive.

This year marks a special milestone as we celebrate our first class of graduates. Many of them are already stepping into roles at their sponsor companies, and we’re working to bring them back as alumni to stay involved in the FOSSI community. That full-circle moment is incredibly powerful.

I’m also looking forward to expanding our programs and events, including our virtual career fair and new opportunities that connect education with real-world experience. Whether it’s through our curriculum, sponsor partnerships, or career development efforts, I’m proud to play a part in building something that has both immediate impact and long-term potential.

This role combines many things I care deeply about: leadership, program strategy, workforce readiness, and student success. As the FOSSI program evolves, I’m excited to keep contributing in ways that support our scholars and help grow the program into its next phase.
