What to Expect at the 2022 AIChE Spring Meeting and 18th Global Congress on Process Safety

Two years ago, before the COVID pandemic, marked AIChE’s last in-person Spring Meeting and Global Congress on Process Safety. This year, we’re excited to resume in-person events starting with the 2022 Spring Meeting and 18th GCPS, taking place at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas (April 10–14).

See below for some meeting events and highlights.

Courses

There are three short courses taking place on April 10, 2022, from 9 AM – 5 PM Central Time. Course topics will include Hydrogen Safety Assurance, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Investigating Process Safety Incidents & Near Misses. Learn more. 

S1: Hydrogen Safety Assurance 

This course, taught by James Sneddon (Risktec Solutions, Inc.), introduces attendees to the challenge that hydrogen presents to those responsible for risk management and safety assurance, highlighting both commonalities and differences between hydrogen and well-understood hydrocarbons. 

S4: Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) – Updated 

This “how to” course is taught by Arthur M. Dowell, one of the principal authors of the AIChE/CCPS book, Layer of Protection Analysis (2001).

S6: Investigating Process Safety Incidents & Near Misses 

Taught by both Brenton Cox and Trey Morrison (Exponent Inc.), this course will follow the incident investigation techniques set forth in CCPS’s most recent edition of Guidelines for Investigating Process Safety Incidents while incorporating information from other relevant guidance documents.

2022 Spring Meeting & 18th GCPS Keynotes

The following keynote addresses set the stage for the conference and introduce the overall conference theme.

2022 AGILE Award Keynote Address

To kick off conference events, Lori Ryerkerk, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President of Celanese Corp, will present the AIChE Government and Industry Leaders (AGILE) Award Keynote lecture. She’ll touch on the drive toward sustainability, the transformation of chemical plants, and will introduce the overall conference theme: “Transformation Beyond 2050: Sustainability and the Chemical Plant of the Future.”

18th GCPS Welcome Plenary Keynote

Following the keynote address, Robert (Bob) Johnston, SVP, Global Operations at ExxonMobil Chemical Company, will present the18th GCPS Welcome Plenary Keynote. In keeping with the conference theme, he’ll discuss the need to collectively cultivate the culture of learning for long-term sustainable improvements.

Monday Luncheon

Enjoy lunch while Bhima Sastri, Director of Integrated Carbon Management in the Office of Fossil Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, discusses “The Role of Carbon Capture in Meeting Net-Zero Carbon Goals.”
