The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection hosted a workshop on extreme weather planning on June 21, 2018. The workshop was attended by about 75 attendees from various industries across the state. The attendees had a keen interest in the lessons learned from Hurricanes Sandy and Harvey. CCPS was represented by Dr. Anil Gokhale. Additional panel participants included CSB, EPA, CITGO, Chemours, AcuTech & Infineum.

MOU Signed Between CCPS and SYRICI

Shenyang Research Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (SYRICI), as a subordinate company of Sinochem Group, visited CCPS and AIChE headquarters in New York City on August 7, 2018. While here, SYRICI signed an MOU with the following agreed-to principles:

  1. Explore cooperation in draft and establish guidelines for fine chemicals process safety, which is suitable for Chinese chemical situations.
  2. Sinochem Group has the advantages of fine chemicals production with big capacity. As the leading process safety organization in China, SYRICI has distinct advantages for fine chemical process safety. SYRICI will cooperate with CCPS and increase CCPS participation in fine chemicals safety in China.
  3. Conduct further cooperation in other areas of chemical process safety, such as fine chemical process safety conferences and personnel training.

Following the meeting, SYRICI joined CCPS as a member.

8th CCPS Latin American Conference on Process Safety (LACPS)

The 8th CCPS Latin American Conference on Process Safety (LACPS), co-organized by ARPEL, is part of CCPS' worldwide effort to prevent major accidents through promoting lifelong learning as well as continual improvement in process safety. The 8th Latin American Conference on Process Safety (LACPS) was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, September 10-13, 2018. The conference had over 320 attendees, with its pre-conference workshop attracting an audience of 140 people.

The Executive Director of AIChE, June Wispelwey, attended the event and spoke about the AIChE UPSLI program. Additionally, Dr. Kristen Kulinowski, the Interim Executive Authority and Board Member of the CSB, presented at the conference. The conference’s technical sessions ranged from cybersecurity to risk management. The sessions were conducted in English and Spanish with simultaneous translations.

3rd Annual Regional Canadian TSC Meeting

The 3rd Annual Regional Canadian TSC Meeting was held in Calgary on September 20, 2018. A record 57 people registered for the meeting. 23 total companies attended, eight being Canadian CCPS Member companies, and two non-regionally based CCPS members (Shell and Jensen Hughes). The meeting agenda was very well received and created a lot of activity during the Q&A as well as positive feedback post-meeting.

Topics included a very interesting presentation from Strathcona County on the use of MIACC Guidance for Land-Use Planning, a talk presented by CNRL on foam chambers for tank tire protection, technical performance standard, CCPS staff presentations, and incident sharing, just to name a few.

6th China Conference on Process Safety

Women in Process Safety Featured in Process Safety Progress

In the September issue of Process Safety Progress, John Murphy, PE, Ron Willey, PHD, and Tracy Carter, PHD, authored an article titled “Women in Process Safety.” This article contains 15 interviews with prominent women in process safety who are associated with CCPS and/or AICHE in some capacity. These are but a handful of women who have been making a difference throughout their careers. Many others, not listed here, have made significant contributions throughout their professional lives, and we honor them as well. We are grateful to all women who have made a difference and look forward to the women of the future who will make significant contributions towards the betterment of process safety.
