Opportunities for Young Professionals in the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division (CRE)

This month, we sat down with Linda Broadbelt, Chair of Catalysis and Reaction Engineering (CRE) Division to discuss opportunities for Young Professionals.

Tell us a little about CRE.

The Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division is a very active part of AIChE that focuses on both catalysis and reaction engineering as applied to a wide range of topical areas, including heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, multiphase flow, novel reactor design, polymerization kinetics and reaction engineering, computational catalysis, complex kinetics, combustion, biomass conversion, and energy and sustainability. Our topical breadth is made evident by the large number of sessions that we co-sponsor with other Divisions and Forums.

What benefits have you received from becoming a member of CRE?

The CRE Division provides an excellent opportunity for professional development and networking. It has ~600 active professional members from industry, government, and academia. It offers excellent sessions at the AIChE Annual Meeting in the fall that are well attended and topically focused. It has a highly successful Division dinner each year at the Annual Meeting, with the opportunity for students to be recognized and receive travel awards. In addition, it has a thriving poster session with award opportunities for students. It has an active leadership board that seeks out younger members to participate in leadership roles.

What opportunities are available for members to get involved? What is a good way for Young Professional Members to get started?

The easiest way to get involved in the CRE Division is to attend the programming meetings that are held at the AIChE Annual Meeting in the fall and volunteer to serve as a session chair or co-chair.  In addition, the CRE Division dinner is an excellent way to meet members of the division and express interest in volunteering.

When does CRE hold events or meetings?

The CRE Division holds programming meetings and an annual Division dinner at the AIChE Annual Meeting in the fall. Periodic updates about the Division and award opportunities are sent via email to the dues-paying members.

How does someone become a member?

Through the CRE website. The dues for the Division are $20.

Who can I contact with any questions or to become more involved?

You can contact any of the officers listed on the Division website, including the Division Chair, Linda Broadbelt, at broadbelt@northwestern.edu
