Chemical engineers, student leaders, and professionals across career stages are the heart of AIChE’s mission to advance the profession and make a lasting impact on society. In this series, we spotlight members whose passion, leadership, and service help shape the future of chemical engineering while strengthening the AIChE community.
This month, we introduce you to AIChE member Rafael Verduzco, AJ Hartsook Professor at Rice University. In this interview, he shares what motivated him to get involved with AIChE, how the organization has supported his personal and professional growth, and what advice he has for others looking to make the most of their AIChE experience.
What motivated you to join AIChE, and how long have you been a member of the organization?
All of my degrees—BS, MS, and PhD—are in chemical engineering, so I consider AIChE my home organization. I joined as an undergraduate and have found it to be a great way to stay in touch with chemical engineers around the world.
How has AIChE helped you grow professionally and personally?
AIChE has helped me stay connected with chemical engineering peers across the country and around the world. It has also supported my professional growth by providing opportunities to organize sessions, present my research, interview for faculty and postdoctoral positions, recruit students, judge posters and presentations, serve on award committees, and take on leadership roles within a Division.
What AIChE initiatives or programs have you been most actively involved in?
I’ve been most actively involved with the AIChE Materials Engineering and Science Division. I also regularly attend the graduate school recruiting fair, as well as the Chem-E-Car and undergraduate poster competitions.
What advice would you give to students or early-career professionals looking to get involved in AIChE?
I would tell them that if they want to build a career in chemical engineering, AIChE is a great way to network, connect with peers, and discover new opportunities. It is also very easy to get involved as there's always so much to do, whether you are helping student clubs or organizations, organizing sessions, or participating in a Division.
What’s your favorite AIChE memory—whether it’s a conference moment, or a funny experience with fellow members?
At last year’s AIChE Annual Meeting in San Diego, my colleague, Prof. Aditya Mohite, and I took a pedicab ride downtown with a driver dressed as Chewbacca. I also attended the meeting with five members of my group, and we took a group photo in front of the AIChE sign.
