South Texas Section Hosts "When I Grow Up" Outreach

The South Texas Section hosted a booth at “When I Grow Up,” a K-12 career fair organized by the Houston Independent School District. The TCEQ exhibit included equipment models from Bayport Technology and Training, process simulation software from Chemstations, and flyers on chemical engineering careers, furnished by AIChE.  Volunteers included Matt Kolodney (coordinator), Carol Schmidt, Gary Reeves, Yurika Diaz, and Gianna Pietrangeli.

The students liked to get their hands on the equipment models (i.e., opening/ closing a block valve).  Chemstations provided visually oriented demos to show on a laptop computer.  When young boys came by, excited by the nearby Houston Police Department booth, we told them about “environmental police” options (EPA and state environmental agencies).  Judging by the big smiles, the students were happy to have their pictures taken in a real industrial hard hat.
