Today on the Google homepage, a Google Doodle marks the 144th birthday of Marie Curie and recognizes France and Poland's 2011 Year of Marie Curie.
Curie was born in Warsaw on this day in 1867 as Maria Salomea Sk?odowska. She moved to Paris at age 24 with her sister, and while earning a degree in mathematics at the Sorbonne, met Pierre Curie, an instructor in chemistry and physics at another school whom she later married. The two went on to share a Nobel Prize in Physics (along with Henri Becquerel) in 1903 for their work. In 1911, Marie Curie won on her own a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two disciplines.
