AIChE Annual Student Conference Opens with Record Attendance

More than 1,800 students gathered this morning at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis for a welcome brunch that officially opened the 2014 Annual Student Conference. AIChE Executive Director June Wispelwey greeted students and shared insights and advice to help as they consider career options. In particular, she singled out the importance of international career experience, giving examples from her own career.

2014 AIChE President Otis Shelton echoed the advice, urging students to take advantage of the international networking opportunities available at the conference, which welcomes many students from around the world.

After brief opening remarks, John Brock, Chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises took the floor. (For more about Brock's background, click here.)

As head of a Western European venture, he shared his own thoughts on international opportunities for chemical engineers. He also shared valuable insights on taking chemical engineering knowledge into the world of business, noting the powerful combination this makes for. In addition, Brock gave his ideas on what it takes to be a strong leader, and also emphasizes the differences between leaders and managers. Managers, he pointed out, are required to "push" to get accomplish tasks, while leaders "pull" the organization in the right direction and carry out a vision. He also impressed upon the audience the need for both strong managers and leaders. Brock closed his presentation by taking questions from the audience.

Cliff Henderson of Georgia Tech, who chairs the Student Chapters Committee, briefly addressed students and closed the program.
