Electric Fields Interrupt Cancer Cell Division

Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are the best known methods for treating cancer, but in this TEDTalk (see video at right), Bill Doyle discusses a new methodology: tumor treating fields. This new technology uses low-intensity electric fields to fight cancer. The electric fields attempt to interrupt cancer cell division.

What's impressive about this method is the quality of life and modest after-effects patients encounter. Unlike chemotherapy, patients aren't in pain and aren't prone to infections or diarrhea - they can live their lives normally and even do the treatment themselves. The treatment, however, is still in its infancy, but it is promising and has provided results comparable to chemo throughout testing. It is also FDA approved.

Could this be the decade's greatest breakthrough in cancer treatment?
