The capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide emitted from process plants is one of the more pressing issues for the energy industry. While much has been reported on the capture of CO2, little has been published on the compression options and issues. This paper summarizes the results of a Bechtel investigation for three different plant applications: a pulverized coal-fired power plant, an LNG plant processing high CO2 natural gas, and an IGCC complex. Working closely with equipment suppliers, Bechtel examined capital and operating costs for several configurations including a series of compressors, a combination of compressor and pumps (supercritical and refrigerated liquids), and different dehydration designs.

The paper provides a framework for the readers to more-effectively initiate and complete their own project-specific designs.
