Direct Measurement and Simulation of Contact Interactions and Tribology of Particulate Systems

Chair(s)

Briscoe, B., Imperial College - London

Co-chair(s)

Luckham, P. F., Imperial College London

This session will combine experimental and theoretical aspects of the direct measurement and characterisation of solid and particles contacts. The length scales to be considered will range from sub nanometre to millimetre. A wide range of ‘model’ and ‘real’ materials will be included. Factors such as the surface energy, condensates, roughness, topography and the state of interfacial lubrication will be included in the scope of the session. The basic experimental methods such as Atomic force microscopy, lateral force microscopy and specifically designed equipment will be critically evaluated and their potential for future development explored. On the theoretical/modelling side classical contact and fracture mechanics as well as a wide variety of nano, micro meso and macro simulation methods will all fall in the scope of the meeting.
