(375a) Reading Analytics and Cramming Using an Interactive Textbook for Material and Energy Balances

Big data was generated using an interactive textbook resulting in almost 300,000 reading interactions for three annual cohorts. Specifically, the Material and Energy Balances zyBook has numerous features where reading clicks and homework answers are compiled for students’ and instructors’ use – including earning a small portion of the final course grade. Previously, median reading rates were observed as high as 99% for over 1,200 recorded clicks per student. However, additional data is available for reading after each assignments' due date to compare to previous results when reading assignments were due. When examining reading analytics after the semester, additional reading was measured despite no incentive of earning a course grade. In total, up to four cohorts representing over 380 students will be presented. Conclusions drawn from the end of semester data will be compared with previous, reproducible findings, including A and B students read statistically significantly more than C+D+F students and female students reading more than male students.
